Soldier Kills Suspected Criminal In Self-Defence At Delta Estate

The Nigerian Army, 63 Brigade Headquarters, has confirmed that a soldier on duty at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Otokutu, Delta State, killed a suspected criminal in an act of self-defence following a violent confrontation on October 13, 2025.

According to a statement issued by Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, the incident occurred when a group of unidentified individuals attempted to forcibly gain entry into the DMLT Estate without complying with routine security checks.

The statement explained that the soldier, stationed at the estate’s main gate, stopped the group for questioning and identity verification. However, the situation escalated when the individuals reportedly became aggressive and refused to submit to security procedures.

“The confrontation turned violent when the suspects attacked the soldier, prompting him to defend himself using standard armed combat techniques,” the statement read.

During the scuffle, one of the suspects sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead. The Otu-Jeremi Police Division was promptly notified, and an investigation into the incident has since commenced.

The 63 Brigade used the opportunity to reassure residents of Delta State of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of human rights in the course of its duties.

“We urge members of the public to remain law-abiding and cooperate fully with security personnel by adhering to established access control procedures,” Captain Bawa-Rijau stated.

He emphasized that routine checks are part of the Army’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to safeguard lives and property within military operational zones.

The Army further reaffirmed that its personnel are trained to respect the fundamental human rights of citizens while ensuring peace, order, and the safety of all residents in Delta State.

The incident at DMLT Estate, now under joint military-police review, underscores the security agencies’ continuous efforts to balance vigilance with accountability in protecting the public.
