WAEC Says Delay in 2025 English Exam to Curb Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay in the conduct of the 2025 English Language paper to heightened efforts to prevent examination malpractice, especially question paper leaks.

In a statement on Thursday, WAEC acknowledged widespread disruptions during the Paper 2 exam, initially scheduled for May 28, which was delayed by several hours in many centres nationwide. Viral videos showed students writing the exam as late as 10 p.m., using torchlights and lanterns due to power outages,  a situation that sparked public outrage and raised concerns over student welfare and exam planning.

WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, said the delay was a consequence of the council’s intensified security measures. “While we successfully prevented leaks, it inadvertently affected the timeliness of the exam,” she noted.

The council also cited logistical issues, security concerns, and sociocultural challenges as contributing factors. It assured that it is working with security agencies to streamline future operations and prevent a recurrence.

WAEC apologised to candidates, schools, and parents for the inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and excellence in its examinations.

The 2025 WASSCE for school candidates began on April 24 and will conclude on June 20.
