Tragedy in Lagos as Multi-Storey Building Collapses
A multi-storey building under construction on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos State collapsed in the early hours of Saturday, trapping an unknown number of people beneath the rubble. The structure, which also housed a popular restaurant, called EqualRight came crashing down around 8 a.m.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and confusion as passersby and occupants were caught off guard by the sudden collapse. “Anyone who knows that building should know it was a bomb waiting to explode,” a resident said.
While the exact cause of the collapse has yet to be determined, many in the area have expressed concerns over the structural integrity of the building long before the incident.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were quickly dispatched to the scene and have commenced rescue operations. As of press time, efforts were still ongoing, with other relevant agencies expected to join the operation.
A large crowd of anxious residents and onlookers has gathered at the site, praying for the survival of those feared trapped under the debris. The area has now been cordoned off to allow emergency teams to work unimpeded.
This tragic incident adds to the growing list of building collapses in Lagos, raising fresh concerns about construction standards and regulatory oversight in the state.
