Obasa Re-Elected as Lagos Assembly Speaker After Meranda’s Resignation
Ajayi Obasa has been re-elected as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the resignation of his predecessor, Meranda Mojisola, after just 49 days in office. Mojisola, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Assembly, stepped down on Monday, 3 March, citing political turmoil and internal divisions within the House.
In a statement during a plenary session, Mojisola explained that the growing tensions within the Assembly had made it difficult for her to continue in the role. “I did not arrive at this decision lightly,” she said, acknowledging the challenges she had faced since assuming office in January 2025. “I have made this selfless sacrifice to protect the integrity of this institution.”
Mojisola, who remains committed to representing her Apapa Constituency, expressed gratitude for the support of her colleagues but noted that the current climate within the Assembly had become untenable. She also urged the members to remain focused on their legislative duties despite the recent turmoil.

With Mojisola’s resignation, the Assembly moved quickly to fill the leadership void. The vacant Speaker’s position saw the return of Ajayi Obasa, who had briefly lost the role to Mojisola. Obasa had previously held the position for several years, and his re-election was seen as a stabilising force for the House. Mojisola was appointed Deputy Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, Obasa thanked his colleagues for their trust and pledged to restore unity within the Assembly. “I am honoured to return to this esteemed position and will work tirelessly to ensure the House remains a beacon of integrity and progress,” he said.
The leadership reshuffle brings an end to a period of uncertainty in the Lagos Assembly, with many hoping that Obasa’s re-election will help restore stability and allow the legislative body to focus on its core responsibilities.
