Four Arrested in Asaba Over Alleged Counterfeit Dollar Scam, Fake Currency Recovered

Four men have been arrested in Asaba following a police operation targeting an alleged fraud syndicate accused of using counterfeit foreign currency to deceive members of the public.

The arrests were made on June 9, 2026, after operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched an intelligence-led investigation into the activities of a group reportedly linked to a series of fraudulent schemes involving fake United States dollar bills.

Investigators had placed a five-man syndicate under surveillance after receiving reports that the group was operating in and around Asaba using a red Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV without registration plates.

The operation led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Joshua Nwaosa, Daniel Arhewe, Prince Chukwuma and John Egwuba along Nnebisi Road in the state capital.

During preliminary questioning, the suspects allegedly directed investigators to a hideout in Asaba believed to be connected to their activities. A subsequent search of the location reportedly resulted in the recovery of 1,600 counterfeit United States dollar notes.

Investigators also recovered military camouflage items from the premises.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to unravel the full scope of the syndicate’s activities.
