“You Are Not Above The Law” NYSC DG Warns Corp Members

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has warned corps members against engaging in cybercrime, cyberbullying and other forms of online misconduct, stressing that they remain subject to Nigeria’s laws.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Nafiu urged corps members to conduct themselves responsibly while serving the nation and avoid activities capable of bringing them into conflict with the law.

He stated that corps members accused of cyberbullying, defamation or related online offences would be investigated and prosecuted by appropriate law enforcement agencies.

“If someone says you cyberbullied him or her, the police will arrest you with your NYSC identity card, and you will bear that responsibility,” he said.

Nafiu also clarified that the NYSC does not provide legal representation for corps members facing criminal or civil cases linked to their activities on social media.

According to him, the scheme may only liaise with the Legal Aid Council to monitor court proceedings or offer pro bono legal support when necessary.

The NYSC boss further disclosed that the scheme has intensified sensitisation programmes aimed at educating corps members on the responsible use of social media and digital platforms.

He added that while the NYSC is not against content creation, corps members must ensure their online engagements remain lawful, respectful and responsible.

The warning comes amid growing concerns across the country over cyberbullying, misinformation, online harassment and the misuse of digital platforms among young Nigerians.
