Court Affirms Jonathan’s Eligibility for 2027 Presidential Election
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains eligible to contest the 2027 general elections.
Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgment in a suit seeking to stop Jonathan from participating in any future presidential election on the grounds that he had already taken the oath of office twice as President.
In his ruling, Justice Lifu dismissed the case, describing it as an abuse of court process.
He held that the matter had already been determined by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, making the fresh suit unnecessary and a waste of judicial time.
“I am bound by the decisions of the Court of Appeal and this court. I have nothing more to add,” the judge stated.
Justice Lifu also awarded costs against the plaintiff, ordering the payment of ₦20 million to Jonathan and ₦1 million to the Attorney-General of the Federation.
