NANS Aspirant Warns Student Body Has Been Politicised, Demands Reform
A presidential aspirant in the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised concern that the student body is becoming increasingly politicised, warning that such influence is eroding its independence and weakening its credibility as a representative voice for students.
He made the statement after submitting his expression of interest form ahead of the association’s national convention scheduled for May 24 in Abuja, stating that his ambition is driven by the need to rebuild the structure of the organisation and return it to its core mandate.
He argued that the student movement should not operate as an extension of political interests, insisting that its processes and leadership have become vulnerable to external influence. He said his focus is on restoring internal democracy, strengthening accountability, and repositioning the association as a credible advocacy platform.
He also urged students across the country to remain united in challenging policies he termed unfavourable, calling for sustained engagement and collective pressure for reforms that prioritise student welfare and national accountability.
