Delta Police Respond to Alleged Extrajudicial Killing in Ubeji

The Delta State Police Command has responded to allegations of extrajudicial killing following the death of 38-year-old Amadi, who was reportedly chased by police officers along the Egbokodo-Ubeji Road in Warri.

In a phone conversation with WS News, CSP Musa Kangiwa Yarima, Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ubeji outpost, clarified that the officers involved were not from his station but were reportedly from either Ekpan Division or the Police Headquarters in Asaba. CSP Yarima declined further comment but confirmed that the matter is being investigated following a formal complaint.

A personnel who spoke anonymously to WS News said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The source added that angry youths retaliated by attacking the Ubeji outpost police station, destroying property including a vehicle belonging to the district officer, and freeing six detainees. Officers on duty reportedly fled for safety.

Our correspondent reports visible damage at the station, including broken windows, damaged fans, chairs, cell gates, and a motorcycle. According to the anonymous source, the community Trust Chairman informed police that the situation was being handled locally after news of Amadi’s death reached the station.

Eyewitnesses reportedly identified a young man, Henry Mone, popularly known as Ashara, as pointing out Amadi shortly before he allegedly fled into the river. The body was later brought to Mone’s family residence after initially being taken to the police station by the angry youths.

Younger brother of the deceased, Victor and a close friend, Abbey Jive who shared an apartment with Amadi the night before his death alleged that he was stoned by police while swimming to evade arrest a violent assault that ultimately led to his death, despite his ability to swim. The late Amadi was described as a peaceful and well-loved member of the community.

Residents have also raised complaints about frequent police raids and assaults in the area, which they say have heightened tension and distrust between the community and law enforcement.

They are now calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
