FG Pledges Urgent Action to Tackle Ecological Crisis in Ugbokodo

The Federal Government has pledged urgent intervention to address severe ecological challenges in the Ugbokodo community of Delta State, including shoreline erosion, flooding, and environmental degradation. This commitment was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a meeting with a delegation from Okpe Kingdom led by the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.). The delegation highlighted the community’s plight despite its significant contributions to Nigeria’s oil wealth.

Senator Akume commended the Orodje for his leadership and assured the delegation that the government is not deliberately neglecting Ugbokodo. He affirmed that the concerns raised are legitimate and deserve prompt attention, promising that the matter would be seriously considered to ensure tangible action and solutions are implemented.

Senator Ede Dafinone, a member of the delegation, stressed the need for environmental justice for host communities. He argued that sustainable development is impossible when communities that fuel the national economy are left vulnerable to ecological disasters. He reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with federal agencies to secure necessary protection and remediation for Ugbokodo.

The delegation, which also included Hon. Benedict Etanabene and other key stakeholders, collectively emphasized the urgency of federal intervention to prevent further loss of land and property in the community. The SGF’s assurance signals a potential turning point for Ugbokodo, which has long awaited concrete action to mitigate its environmental crises.
