Delta Police Sets Strict Rules for Vigilante Operations Across State

Delta State Police Command has directed all recognised vigilante and community security groups to maintain strict compliance with legal and professional standards in their operations. CP Aina Adesola warned that individuals linked to confraternities or criminal networks cannot participate in lawful vigilante activities, stressing that members must renounce any unlawful affiliations to remain part of legitimate security efforts.

The Commissioner of police gave the directive at a high-level strategic security conference on 11 February 2026, bringing together Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and recognised vigilante groups. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the Police and community-based security organisations.

The Commissioner also made it clear that vigilante members are not permitted to detain suspects. Any person apprehended must be immediately handed over to the nearest Police Division for lawful processing, reinforcing that all actions must operate within the law.

CP Adesola emphasised that only Police-authorised vigilantes may carry firearms. No vigilante group has an independent right to bear weapons, and all firearms must be under Police supervision to ensure accountability and safety.

Intelligence gathering and timely information sharing with the Police were highlighted as key responsibilities for all community security stakeholders. The Commissioner noted that effective collaboration and rapid reporting are critical tools for crime prevention and maintaining public safety.

CP Adesola further stated that all vigilante operations, including patrols and suspect handling, must be coordinated with Divisional Police Officers within their jurisdictions. He stressed that independent or uncoordinated actions could undermine security efforts and weaken collective outcomes across Delta State.
