No Directive to Lift Ban on Sachet Alcohol, Says NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed reports claiming that the Federal Government directed it to lift the ban on sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages in PET bottles of 200ml and below.

In a statement issued by its Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency stated that no such instruction was received from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or any authorised government channel. She reaffirmed that NAFDAC operates strictly within its legal mandate and implements only officially communicated policies.

The agency disclosed that enforcement efforts remain in progress, including the evacuation of products that violate the regulation. It added that some manufacturers have already halted production of the affected pack sizes in alignment with the regulatory goal of limiting minors’ access to alcohol.

NAFDAC further cited data indicating that nearly half of underage alcohol consumers obtain such drinks from sachets and small PET bottles. The agency urged the public and media to disregard unverified claims and rely on official statements, warning that the spread of false information could distort public understanding of government policy.
