Sowore Remanded in Kuje After Court Upholds Bail Revocation
Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
In a brief ruling, Justice Umar directed that Sowore remain in custody until the court determines his motion seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
The court also dismissed an earlier application by Sowore requesting that Justice Umar withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
Following the ruling, the matter was adjourned to June 24 for the hearing of the motion for stay of execution, which was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Justice Umar had, on June 16, revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear in court for trial. The judge also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
