Nigerian Navy Rescues Three After Boat Capsizes on Bennett River in Warri

Three passengers were rescued by the Nigerian Navy after a boat capsized on the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, during a heavy rainstorm.

The rescue operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA while conducting a routine maritime security patrol along the waterway, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.

The Navy said its patrol team noticed distressed passengers and floating debris on the river, indicating that a boat accident had occurred. The personnel immediately responded by launching a search and rescue operation.

“Without hesitation, the patrol team immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, successfully recovering the three victims and salvaging valuable items from the wreckage,” the statement said.

According to preliminary investigations, the boat capsized as a result of severe weather conditions and rough waves caused by a heavy rainstorm.

The rescued passengers were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received prompt medical attention before being discharged after their condition was stabilised.

“The rescued passengers were promptly evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received immediate medical attention before being discharged after their condition was stabilized,” Folorunsho stated.

The Navy described the successful operation as a reflection of its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring safety within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“The successful rescue underscores the Nigerian Navy’s dual role as both a maritime security force and a first responder in emergencies within the maritime domain,” the statement added.

It further noted that continuous naval patrols and a sustained presence on the waterways remain essential for enhancing maritime safety, protecting lives and providing rapid assistance to individuals in distress.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment while supporting lawful activities across the country’s waterways and coastal communities.
