Flooding: Delta Govt Begins Drainage Project in Osubi, Others
Delta State government has officially commenced the construction of a 20-kilometre storm drainage project aimed at addressing severe flooding issues in Osubi, Ugolo-Okpe, Okuokoko, and surrounding areas in Okpe Local Government Area.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, who inspected the discharge point at Ugolo-Okpe on Tuesday. Aniagwu assured residents that the first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2025, will help alleviate the flooding challenges that have long plagued the region.
“This construction is similar to what we implemented in Asaba, where flooding was affecting numerous communities in the capital territory, we are focused on solving the problem of houses being submerged during the rainy season and ensuring that development can take place in these communities.” Aniagwu said.
The storm drainage project consists of underground storm water drains, open drains, and trapezoidal drains, designed to efficiently manage floodwaters and prevent swampy water from obstructing development. The first phase will focus on the areas of Osubi, Ugolo-Okpe, and parts of Okuokoko.
The Commissioner also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work, urging the contractor to speed up construction to minimize inconvenience for local residents. He acknowledged the cooperation of the community despite the disruptions caused by the ongoing construction.
Aniagwu also inspected several other key road projects in the state, including Esezi Road in Orerokpe and the Orerokpe-Okuloho-Oviri-Okpe-Aragba-Okpe Road. In Abraka, he also reviewed remedial works on the Old Abraka-Eku Road, directing the contractor to complete the work within three weeks.
The President-General of Oruarivie-Abraka kingdom, Chief Ovie Emudainohwo, commended the state government for its efforts, particularly in addressing the road issues, and pledged the community’s support for the timely completion of these projects.
