EFCC Secures Conviction of 10 Naira Abuse Offenders in Delta,Edo
The Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of 10 individuals for abusing and mutilating the naira in separate judgments delivered by the Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State, and Benin City, Edo State.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the convicts were arrested and prosecuted for spraying naira notes at social events, an act prohibited under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
The convicted persons are Lucky Onoberhie, Happy Joseph Isioma, Friday Ehiedu, Collins Ndudi Albert, Okorie Builder, Ernest Achieme, Isicheli Desmond Chijioke, Nwosu Davison, Enadegh Agbonmware, and Lucky Osaro.
One of the charges revealed that Ernest Achieme tampered with ₦50,000 in ₦200 notes by spraying them while dancing at a wedding ceremony in Kwale on December 31, 2025.
All 10 defendants pleaded guilty to the charges after they were arraigned, following which the prosecution urged the courts to convict and sentence them.
Justice F. A. Olubanjo sentenced Onoberhie, Isioma, Ehiedu, Ndudi Albert, Builder, Achieme, Chijioke, and Davison to 12 months’ imprisonment or the option of a ₦100,000 fine each.
In separate rulings, Justice (Prof.) C. A. Obiozor sentenced Agbonmware and Osaro to six months’ imprisonment each, with the option of a ₦100,000 fine for similar offences.
The EFCC also disclosed that all the convicts signed written undertakings to maintain good conduct and refrain from abusing the naira in the future.
