Delta Govt Threatens Prosecution for Procurement Law Breaches
The Delta State Government has warned accounting officers in its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to strictly comply with the provisions of the State Public Procurement Law 2020, stressing that violations could lead to prosecution even after they have left office.
The Chairman of the Delta State Procurement Council, Mr. David Igbodo, gave the warning at the end of a two-day Public Procurement Enlightenment Workshop held in Asaba.
The workshop, approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, was organised to sensitise commissioners, local government chairmen, permanent secretaries, heads of tertiary institutions and other accounting officers on procurement procedures and the need to strengthen due process in project execution.
Speaking at the event, Igbodo said the training was designed to give accounting officers a better understanding of the procurement law and help them avoid actions that could expose them to legal consequences after leaving office.
He warned that although the law may appear inactive while officials are in service, it remains enforceable and can be used to hold them accountable after their tenure.
Igbodo also advised accounting officers to keep certified copies of official documents, noting that such records could be useful in explaining decisions taken during their time in office if the need arises.
Participants commended the Delta State Government for organising the workshop and pledged to uphold the provisions of the procurement law.
Certificates and awards were presented to outstanding officers in recognition of their exemplary compliance with the state’s procurement regulations.
