Navy Strengthens Cyber Defence

NNS Delta

The Nigerian Navy has stepped up efforts to strengthen its cyber defence capability, warning that future conflicts will be fought as much in cyberspace as on conventional battlefields.

The move was highlighted during a two-day Intra-Command Communication and Cyber Security Competition at Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Warri, where communication and cyber operators underwent practical exercises to improve their ability to protect military communications and critical digital infrastructure.

Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Sanusi Ibrahim, represented by Commander NNS Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, said cyberspace had become the fifth domain of warfare, making information security critical to military success.

He said the Navy was investing in continuous training to counter evolving cyber threats, citing global conflicts where cyberattacks disrupted military operations and warning that criminal groups in Nigeria increasingly use encrypted communications and digital technologies to evade security agencies.

“The real competition begins after today—in the field, on patrol and in defence of our networks. Let us remain vigilant, adaptable and technically sound,” he said.
