Effurun Extrajudicial Killing: Five Dismissed Police Officers Plead Not Guilty
Five dismissed police officers, including a former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), have pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the alleged extra-judicial killing of Warri-based musician Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as “OG Million.”
The defendants were arraigned on Tuesday before Justice M. Nduka of the Delta State High Court 4 in Asaba over the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The lead defendant, former ASP Usman Nuhu, also known as “Ogbegbe,” was arraigned alongside former ASPs Owoloko Daurou Pamo and Okoh Kelechi, as well as Inspectors Goodluck Kingsley and Omonigho Ahweyevu.
Nuhu is facing a charge of murder under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap.
C21, Volume 1, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006. The remaining four defendants were charged with negligent acts causing harm under Section 344 of the same law.
After the defendants entered not guilty pleas, Justice Nduka adjourned the case until July 14, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
Addressing journalists after the proceedings, Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN), who is leading the prosecution, said the state was fully prepared to prosecute the case.
“The defendants have been arraigned and have taken their pleas, as they are entitled to do. They pleaded not guilty, but our case is very straightforward. Nobody has the right to make himself the accuser, the judge and the executioner,” he said.
Ohwovoriole described the circumstances surrounding the incident as disturbing and assured the public that justice would be pursued.
“We are fully prepared for the trial. I assure the public that justice will be served,” he added.
Counsel to two of the defendants, C. Promise, also expressed readiness for trial, confirming that proceedings would resume on July 14.
Ogidi, 28, popularly known as “OG Million,” was allegedly killed at Effurun Main Motor Park after reportedly being apprehended while attempting to send a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition to a recipient in Sapele.
